Grass Routs Green Community Challenge

Grass Roots Completes 2023 Green Commuting Challenge

Our Grass Roots Employee Resource Group (ERG) completed its 3rd annual nVent Green Commuting Challenge. In honor of Zero Emissions Day which takes place annually on September 21, nVent employees participated in a three-month long challenge to Commute Green as much as possible.

With the words "Give our planet one day off", Ken Wallace launched the day in Canada in 2008 and since then the initiative has inspired events internationally. The idea behind Zero Emissions Day is to raise awareness and minimize the enormous impact that the use of fossil fuels has on the environment and the global climate. For this reason, September 21 is intended to mark a day of pause for the Earth by eliminating the use of oil and coal as much as possible.

The ERG set a goal for the challenge to log at least 20,000 miles of zero-emissions commuting, which its members surpassed. In total, 76 nVent employees commuted over 60,000 miles adding up to 25,000 kg CO2 diverted from the atmosphere. Employees also planted 1,000 trees in celebration through #teamtrees.org. Each year the group has participated in the challenge; Grass Roots has exceeded its goals.

“It is so energizing to see the year over year growth in engagement and impact of our Grass Roots Green Commuting Campaign. We continue to crush our target each year and this year we surpassed our goal by over 40,000 miles! I am inspired,” said Erica Ikin, Lean Engineer and Co-Chair of Grass Roots. “Our employees from around the world are sharing a sense of purpose around protecting our planet and taking action to purposefully reduce their travel footprint and resulting CO2 emissions. It supports the essence of our nVent and Grass Roots shared mission and ESG Planet Pillar Goals to become more environmentally sustainable and lessen our impact on the environment.”
